社会史研究者と経済思想史研究者による共同研究としてはわが国初のものである本研究は、近代イギリスにおける公共圏の歴史研究を活性化することをめざして企画された。四年間にわたるこの共同研究では、三名の海外からの招聘研究者を含む多数の研究者と、公共圏の機能や内部構造、中間団体や議会・国家権力との関係が議論された。研究分担者による成果はすべて英語論文としてまとめられ、報告書に掲載されている。研究分担者とその論題だけを示すと、次の通りである。
