Preparation and fluorescence properties of fluoroaluminate glasses containing Eu2+ ions

The fabrication conditions and fluorescence properties of glasses containing Eu2+ ions in the fluoroaluminate system have been examined. Samples containing Eu2+ ions equal to or less than 1 cat% had an emission peak at 360 nm and a broad emission band at about 400 nm when excited by 250 nm UV light. The emission intensity at 360 nm decreased and the emission band at 400 nm shifted to longer wavelength with an increase of Eu2+ concentration. Excitation spectra have also been measured. The causes of the occurrence of these phenomena are discussed.
