News programs are often used in Japanese language classes for listening practice. Vocabulary in news broadcasts is normally oresented as a list of single words. In this oaoer. I will suggest another approach in which words are oresented in the collocation oatterns in which they most often appear in news broadcasts. To find out what oarticular combinations of noun +particle+verb occur in news broadcasts, these combinations were extracted from a database of 361 news renorts. Furthermore, native sneakers of Japanese were asked to oredict the verb they thought most likely to appear after each noun +particle 10 combinations were tested. In the case of the most frequent combinations, native sneakers made correct predictions in most cases. In cases where there were a number of verbs that could be used after certain noun + particle combinations, native sneakers' predictions also reflected this diversity. This is probably due to the fact that these verbs are similar in meaning. In the case of collocations which contain a oarticle 'ga', the native speakers showed a wide variation in answers. The results of this study of collocations in news reports suererest that this kind of vocabulary training using collocations would benefit learners if incorporated into listening instruction.
