I have built a screening instrument for assessing students language abilities, such as phonological awareness, orthographic knowledge, reading and writing fluency, and listening accuracy. In addition to this screening instrument, I have made a questionnaire for students to self-report their language ability and skills, study skills, attitude towards English, memory and time management. I have conducted a trial of both the screening instrument and the questionnaire in-class, with 50 participants. I have analysed the assessment data and the questionnaire. I was able to isolate items that discriminate students according to their abilities tested by the screening instrument. In addition, I was able to identify tentative factors for the questionnaire question items.
