Dr. Koji Kitazawa is a medical professional and researcher specializing in ophthalmology.  Dr. Kitazawa earned his medical license from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan and received his Ph.D. in Medicine in 2015.  With over 15 years of expertise, he has significantly contributed to regenerative medicine, particularly in treating refractory ocular surface disorders.  Dr. Kitazawa has been working on severe limbal stem cell deficiency, such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), chemical burns, and Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid (OCP).  In previous publications (Cornea, 2019; Exp Eye Res, 2017; Cell Rep, 2016), he has unveiled the mechanisms that maintain the homeostasis of the ocular surface.  Additionally, he successfully achieved the direct reprogramming of human skin fibroblasts into corneal epithelial-like cells using transcription factors, providing new insights into corneal regenerative modalities.  In 2019, Dr. Kitazawa went abroad to the United States to work on aging research at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.  His innovative studies have determined how senescent cells in the ocular surface can disrupt tissue structure and function, paving the way for developing therapeutic strategies targeting senescent cells.  Dr. Kitazawa has also found that the biological maturity of corneal donors significantly influences post-corneal transplantation outcomes.  Demonstrating a multidisciplinary approach to aging research, Dr. Kitazawa has been involved in longitudinal cohort studies on aging, providing holistic insights that integrate molecular biology with epidemiological research.  His interest also extends to keratoconus, where he provides in patient care at specialized keratoconus clinics—focusing on developing innovative biomarkers for early diagnosis and new surgical techniques for treatment.  Dr. Kitazawa has received multiple Young Investigator Awards and continues to impact nationally and internationally.  His ultimate goal is to elucidate the pathology of ocular diseases and to discover novel therapies that are currently considered untreatable.
