Sitting here in front of my computer again, trying to find the words that might move you to stop supporting Israel’s genocide of Palestinians. Israel has killed and maimed so many already and is poised to launch a military offensive on Rafah that will be an utter bloodbath. Is there any point at which you will stop weakly expressing “concern” and actually do something to end Australia’s complicity in this disgusting crime? Why don’t you clearly condemn what Israel is doing? Why doesn’t the Australian government impose sanctions on Israel? Why don’t you reinstate funding to UNRWA? Why do you continue with “business as usual,” when that means condemning the Palestinian people to unmitigated horror, and destroying the legitimacy of international legal norms that protect us all?

I demand that Australia end its unconditional support for Israel and its complicity in Israel’s genocide, and take urgent action to protect Palestinian lives, including by imposing sanctions on Israel and restoring funding to UNRWA.

I am shocked and disgusted that the Australian government has cut off funding to UNRWA. UNRWA has already sacked 9 of the 12 staff members accused of taking part in the October 7 attack. The other three are missing or dead. UNRWA sacked these 9 people BEFORE investigating whether the accusations against them were true, and now both UNRWA and the UN in New York have begun investigations.

What more do you expect UNRWA to do to deal with this situation?

Why have you not reacted in a similar way, e.g. imposing sanctions, with regards to allegations of crimes committed by Israel, such as the killing of more than 100 UNRWA staff members since October 7 (which may constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity and/or genocide) and the finding by the ICJ that it is "plausible" that Israel has committed acts that violate the Genocide Convention? Israel has done absolutely nothing to investigate these crimes or punish those responsible, and in fact continues to commit international crimes in full view of the entire world, brazenly ignoring the orders against it by the ICJ.

Why are you disrespecting the decision of the ICJ and continuing to violate the Genocide Convention? The ICJ ordered Israel to ensure the provision of humanitarian aid, which is not possible without the assistance of UNRWA. By cutting off UNRWA’s funding, you are deepening your complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide and guaranteeing the deaths of more Palestinians.

The acts of the Australian government on this issue are illegal and morally depraved. I demand that Australia stop its unconditional support for Israel and take urgent action to protect Palestinian lives, including by restoring funding to UNRWA.

Why does the Australian government keep kicking the Palestinians when they are struggling to survive an ongoing genocide? You immediately cut off funding to UNRWA after allegations of criminal conduct on the part of a small number of UNRWA staff members, despite the fact that UNRWA has already terminated the contracts of these individuals and called for a transparent independent investigation. Yet you take no measures at all against Israel, despite the overwhelming evidence of ongoing and systematic commission of international crimes by that country against Palestinians (including the recent finding of the ICJ that there is a plausible risk of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza) and Israel’s outright refusal to stop carrying out these crimes, let alone allow any independent investigation.

The ICJ just ordered Israel to “take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.” As Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA Commissioner General, has pointed out, “The only way that this can be done is through cooperation with international partners, especially UNRWA as the largest humanitarian actor in Gaza. … It would be immensely irresponsible to sanction an Agency and an entire community it serves because of allegations of criminal acts against some individuals, especially at a time of war, displacement and political crises in the region.”

As a party to the Genocide Convention, Australia should be doing everything it can to ensure that Israel complies with the ICJ order and to protect the Palestinian people. Instead you continue to facilitate and be complicit in Israel’s genocide by refusing to condemn Israel’s actions, refusing to stop the export of parts for fighter jets used by Israel in attacks on Palestinians, and now by cutting off a humanitarian lifeline.

I condemn the Australian government’s current stance on the situation in Palestine and demand that it end its support for Israel and take urgent action to protect Palestinian lives, including by restoring funding to UNRWA.

To be precise, genocide is an unallowable act, so it's not even the object of opposing or not opposing. But as a declaration of personal attitude towards what Israel is doing in Gaza and in the West Bank, I think it's not unreasonable to use the word "oppose".

British and US doctors who have recently returned home from assisting at al-Aqsa hospital in central Gaza have described an utterly apocalyptic and inhumane situation in the emergency department. A 3-year-old child with his bowels exposed from a shrapnel injury, sitting next to his sister with a traumatic brain injury and the body of their cousin, dead from a blast injury. A young employee of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) lying with both his legs severed, dying in agony without morphine. An 11-year-old girl severely burned in an explosive blast, also without pain relief of any kind.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently stated that “nobody will stop us” and told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that “this is not just our war – it is also your war.” Do you really want to keep supporting this genocidal assault on children and civilians? Without US weapons and diplomatic backing it could not continue.

I’ve heard that US federal employees across nearly two dozen agencies plan to walk off the job on Tuesday January 16 to protest your administration’s handling of the Gaza war. I’m glad there are people in the US who want to be able to look back and say they did everything they could to stop the genocide of the Palestinian people.

Meanwhile your own population suffers from lack of health care, decent education, and other social services because you're so busy spending billions of dollars on warfare. No wonder your approval ratings are so low.

On December 28, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken posted the following message on his Twitter account: "This has been an extraordinarily dangerous year for press around the world. Many killed, many more wounded, hundreds detained, attacked, threatened, injured – simply for doing their jobs. I am profoundly grateful to the press for getting accurate, timely information to people."

Despite having the power to stop these crimes, the US government has in fact done the opposite: it has continued to arm and fund Israel and block efforts in the UN Security Council to reach a ceasefire agreement. Given this background, the audacity of Mr Blinken in making the above statement is truly astounding. The US must immediately stop supporting Israel's genocide of Palestinians.
