I work on modern and contemporary Chinese history. I came to Japan in 1970 to work on my dissertation, and have worked in Japan since. I work on the following questions: rural change in 20th century China, East Asian trading networks, rural industrialization. I am currently working on a book in English that will build on the Kanko Chosa village surveys and re-surveys done over the last ten years with Japanese and Chinese colleagues. I also help now with the Harvard-Yenching Institute's programs in Asia and would like to contact alumni of the HYI programs.
