Xiaoyan Li conducts research from the perspective of Knowledge Science, focusing on how linguistic and cultural knowledge is created, shared, and utilized in multicultural societies. Her work emphasizes integrated education of language and culture, and the knowledge creation processes that emerge through intercultural understanding. She conceptualizes linguistic culture as dynamic knowledge that underpins human communication across diverse social contexts.

Her primary research methods include interdisciplinary inquiry into educational practice and theory, case studies of multicultural group work in participatory classrooms, and applied studies supporting foreign guardians as they learn and adapt to the often implicit knowledge embedded within Japanese school culture.

In recent years, she has expanded her research into the integration of AI and education, with a particular interest in the application of conversational AI and educational chatbots in language and cultural learning. She explores how AI technologies can support the transmission and understanding of tacit knowledge and culturally embedded practices that are difficult to articulate explicitly, especially in multilingual and multicultural settings.
