President of ASU International / Business Consultant on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Issues, Author and translator of eight books on CSR, Social Entrepreneurship, Ethics, Philanthropy and Gift Economy. Mother of a daughter. Educator. Social entrepreneur interested in making the world a better place. Cheerleader for individuals and people in business world. Eco-ist (not egoist) who loves farming, plants and bugs. Lived half of her life in the US and half abroad, including Japan and Australia.
Maki Saito graduated from Sacred Heart University in Japan in 1991. Between 1991-1996, she was in charge of marketing, and PR for Nagano Olympics and projects with the United Nations at Dentsu Inc, one of the largest advertising agency in the world.
In 1998, Ms Saito earned a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University’ School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) in New York, USA. At Columbia, she concentrated her studies on corporate social responsibility.
After obtaining her Masters, Maki worked as a research consultant for two years for a New York-based think tank that researched and ranked socially responsible firms, and for an organization that issues SA8000 international labor standards certifications.
In 2000, she co-founded an online donation website whose mission was to bridge for-profit corporations, NGOs and individual donors. She also co-founded a charity which supported at risk youth in Africa and Asia through contacts with the World Bank in Japan.
Currently, she devotes her time to promoting her most important and influential book to date: 100 Ways to Change Japan from Tohoku (the arrival of the “gift economy”). This important work, which was just published by NHK, gathers 100 inspiring and insightful stories from Tohoku, Japan where the massive earthquake, resulting tsunami and devastation, including the incident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, and explains how this illustrates the power of the “Gift Economy”.
When she is not teaching or writing or promoting her books, or being a full time mom, Maki still finds the time to consult on Social Change / Sustainability issues both in Japan and the US, a long time passion, lecture at the MBA program in SBI Graduate School, and sit on the boards of both the “Human Security Forum” of Tokyo University and “Sailors for the Sea Japan”.
She was a former adviser for Meguro Ward Environment Committee in Tokyo Japan.
She is also a member of The Green Business Networking, and Sustainable Business Council LA in the US.
She lived on organic farm in Southern California for six months with her daughter and now runs hands-on workshop on sustainability / food for students.
