The origin of the Medina (old city) of Fez dates back to 8th century. After its foundation based on the Al Qarawiyin Mosque, the city has developed and sustained its sophisticated urban tissue. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, then as a Capital of Islamic Culture for Arab Region 2007 by ISESCO (Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
In this paper, I will introduce some sustainable systems of urban tissue based on the Waqf (Habous) system, which suggest us how to manage traditional and populated urban space in the Islamic society. Thanks to the French colonial policy to avoid effects of modernization, the medina of Fez is still remaining as before. The mixed use I discuss in this paper is not planned mixed use, but historically matured mixed use as an accumulation of wisdom through the history over a thousand years. The research question of this paper is how and why the uses are mixed in this old city that may seem simply complex and confusion apparently.
