Wave-trapping control of a cascaded lumped-parameter system using opposed active wave diodes

A novel vibration control methodology for a cascaded lumped-parameter system based on active wave control is presented herein. The purpose of this study is to establish wave-trapping control using opposed active wave diodes, which are feedback control systems that use the amplitude of the incident wave as a feedback signal. First, the transfer matrix method for a cascaded lumpedparameter system is introduced to treat the wave dynamics of the target system. Next, an active wave diode is presented for the target system, and its control effect is investigated numerically. The active wave diode achieved a vibration-free state in the target region. However, this method caused new resonant phenomena in the uncontrolled region. Subsequently, based on the linear fractional transform, a wave-trapping control system consisting of two active wave diodes set in opposition was formulated. Finally, numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the proposed method. It is shown that even if the ideal controller which is an irrational function of the Laplace variable is approximated by a rational function, the disturbance energy is trapped within a narrow region by the proposed method, and an almost vibration-free state and inactivation of the vibration modes are simultaneously realised in wide regions.
