Michael Schiltz is nowadays working for the Modern Japanese Studies Program at the University of Hokkaido. Before, he had a hybrid position at Graduate Institue, Geneva. Apart from his role of digital preservationist and curator for a unique collection of historical stock exchange quotes hosted there, he was a lecturer in the Department of International History. Before that, he was an associate professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo. Even longer ago, he did several extended research stays at the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC.

Michael is the author of *The Money Doctors From Japan: Finance, Imperialism, and the Building of the Yen Bloc, 1895-1937*, published in 2012 by Harvard University Press. A second, completed, book manuscript employs forensic accounting techniques to discuss banking practice in the nascent branch network of the country’s prestigious exchange bank: the Yokohama Specie Bank (YSB). One current project seeks to develop this perspective further for the study of YSB’s later history; yet another focuses on financial scandals in prewar Japan. Michael is also strongly interested in the impact of telegraphy and other electronic media (gramophone, …) on 19th century Japanese society.

Apart from being a financial historian, he has been a vocal advocate of OpenAccess, OpenSource, and a whole lot of other things with 'open' as a prefix. He is also a regular contributor to Bloomberg Echoes, a weblog on economic history hosted by the Bloomberg Company.
