広島出身。1994年に国際基督教大学卒業後、香港中文大学へ留学。香港と日本において新聞社、金融機関、有機農業関連企業などに勤めながら、1997年からは手づくり企画「ジャーニー・トゥ・フォーエバー」共同代表として、食・農・環境問題に取り組む市民活動を企画運営した。2011年に大学院へ移り、ロンドン市立大学修士(食料栄養政策)、京都大学博士(経済学)を取得。食と資本主義の歴史、植物油を中心とした食の政治経済を研究している。国際社会学会 農業食料社会学部会(ISA RC40)東アジア地域代表理事。AMネット、使い捨て時代を考える会、環境市民、西日本アグロエコロジー協会、ミュニシパリズム京都などの市民活動にも参加。
Midori HIRAGA researches international political economy of food, focusing on how vegetable oils (soy, palm, rapeseed, etc.) have been disseminated in industrial mass diet. She received a Master of Science degree in Food and Nutrition Policy at City University London, UK, and a Doctoral degree in Economics at Kyoto University, Japan. Her PhD dissertation revealed the historical development of vegetable oil industry in Japan, and made argument that Japan's nation-state building project and its political economy for imperial, military, and capitalist development transformed vegetable oils into everyday foodstuff. Her dissertation was published as a single-authored book in Japanese in 2019, and is forthcoming in English in 2024 as a Business History of Soy. She now expands her research to food and capitalism -- from its historical intertwined development based on the Food Regime frameworks; its current crisis focusing on agri-food business and the Financialization of Food; and the sustainable system of food and economy by exploring various challenges of food as a commons, Uzawa Hirofumi's Social Common Capital, and Social Solidarity Economy. She also participates in civil society activities on organic food and agriculture, Agroecology, food bank, civil actions on environment, as well as municipalism and globalization.
