Participatory, Social Transformational Community Health Action for Prevention of Malaria and Communicable Diseases in Democratic Republic of Congo

1.Project phase 1: ‘Community Participatory Malaria Research’ (July2017 - March 2018). The Community Malaria Research project was implemented in 2 study sites, in the Kongo central province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the participation of local political and health authorities, and representatives of local communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as well. This study consisted in 3 main activities: (1)Health surveys, (2)Malaria testing (blood tests) and (3)Collection of epidemiologic data from hospitals located in our study sties. As outcomes, 1 peer-reviewed paper was already published[ Ngatu et al. Environmental and sociodemographic factors associated with household malaria burden in the Congo. Malaria J. 2019; 18: 53]; and another paper is now under peer-review process.2.Project phase 2: “Community Participatory Action for HIV/AIDS Prevention in Kongo Central Province, DRC’ ( July 2018 - March 2019)- We implemented this study in 2 Congolese provinces, Kinshasa and Kongo Central Province. Surveys were conducted in 4 study sites simultaneously. The aim of study were to: (1)Evaluate HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and practices of young Congolese people; (2)Estimate the prevalence HIV infection among them (data collected from voluntary counseling & testing) and (3)Contribute to strengthening the national HIV/AIDS program.- The total number surveyees was 4,088 individuals; the majority of participants were from the Kongo central province, 3,129 individuals (76.5%). Data are currently being analysed.
