I study linkages between water and local politics in cities and beyond through urban processes of capital accumulation, and the resultant implications for human insecurity (including food security). I draw from literatures on state and governance, urban theory, political ecology, criminology, and philosophy of science. I use quantitative and qualitative methods (household surveys, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, process tracing, comparative analysis, GIS, etc.). 

 My ongoing research focuses on water politics in Karachi, Pakistan, impact of climate change and urbanization on food and human insecurity in peri-urban and rural areas in Sindh, Pakistan, water governance and justice in the Philippines, and mapping water informality in informal settlements in and around Metro Manila. This work is made possible through collaborations with scholars and practitioners based at the University of Tokyo and universities and research-based organizations in Pakistan and the Philippines. It has also contributed to an IFI policy recommendation on creating equitable water futures in cities in the Global South.

My grant-funded research focuses on understanding governance processes in Asia and Africa in response to stresses posed by climate change and urbanization. Funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), April 2024-March 2027)
