Animation, films, comics, video games and other forms of popular content from the Japanese creative industries currently attract global attention because of their unique style of cultural expression and products that is appreciated by both Western and Asian consumers. The Japanese creative industries have also evolved their unique social capital with three features. Firstly, the majority of Japanese creative industries have developed regional, cohesive and semi-persistent business networks around the Tokyo megalopolitan area, forming unique communities of practices, where creators, producers, and managers exchange information, transfer knowledge and improve skills for collaborative production and marketing. However, current growth of internet may virtually expand their communities globally. Secondly, the ‘consumer involvement approach’ is obvious in Japanese creative industries, where some lead consumers not only criticize original contents by voicing their preferences via Social Networking Sites, but also influence content production by their articulation of new ideas generated on fan journals and at events. Thirdly, although Japanese creative industries were mainly suppliers for established mass media industries, they evolve cross-industry business alliances and diversify their business into new character and promotional ones because of the widespread use of the internet and the economic decline of mass media industries.
