A reliable evaluation method has not been established for service learning, in which students apply what they have learned by engaging in voluntary service work. In this paper, we qualitatively analyze the problems students faced and solved in “Information Volunteer,” which is a service-learning-based course in which students engage in information education activities at elementary schools. Participant observation and group interviews were chosen as research methods, and a case-code matrix, which is a qualitative data analysis method, was used. As a result, 30 cases were generated and categorized in three categories, i.e., “problems,” “provision,” and “what they learned from the activity,” and three subcategories, i.e., “communication,” “office work,” and “teaching.” Students were unable to solve all problems because the number of cases in the “problems” category was greater than that in the “provision” category. In addition, students demonstrated different levels of performance, which might stem from disparity in the academic ability of the students, and activities vary and change depending on each school. We developed a rubric (assessment criteria) on the basis of our research results.
