卵巣内には莫大な数の原始卵胞が存在している。原始卵胞内の卵母細胞は将来排卵される卵子のプールを形成しているが、転写因子FOXO3が関与する機構によって発育開始が抑制的に制御されており、これが哺乳類の長い生殖期間を保証している。FOXO3の抑制から解除された卵母細胞は、最終の大きさに向かってある程度自律的に発育しつづけるが、卵胞選抜機構によって選抜され、これを生き延びた卵母細胞のみが排卵に至る。この機構は一度に多数の卵子が排卵されることを防ぎ、哺乳類の胎生を確保している。(著者抄録)
