Latent heat storage characteristics of heat storage vessel packed with surface cross-linked form-stabilized high-density polyethylene latent heat storage material by constant temperature pool boiling phenomena

This paper deals with the experimental investigation of latent thermal energy storage characteristics of surface cross-linked form-stabilized high-density polyethylene pellets as a phase change material (PCM) by constant temperature pool boiling and condensation of aqueous ethylene glycol solution. The polyethylene pellets and heat transfer fluid of aqueous ethylene glycol solution are mixed and filled into a cylindrical heat storage vessel. The heat transfer into the polyethylene pellets is mainly enhanced by the condensation of vapor bubbles of aqueous ethylene glycol solution, which is heated by an electric heater at the bottom of the vessel. The effects of boiling temperature, the amount of the pellets and aqueous ethylene glycol solution, and heater surface temperature on the heat storage characteristics are investigated. As a result, an optimum packing height Hp.opt for the minimum completion time of heat storage process has been obtained when the value of dimensionless parameter Aspect factor is 1.
