I have been teaching English for Nursing Purposes at Fukuoka Jo Gakuin Nursing University since 2015. In 2016, I co-founded the Japan Association for Nursing English Teaching (JANET) with Professor Simon Capper (Japanese Red Cross Hiroshima College of Nursing) to build a professional network of language and nurse educators, clinical nurses, and nursing students to support the development of nursing English education in Japan.

My teaching and research focus on healthcare communication in nursing education, particularly in relation to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) patients in Japan. One area of my work examines the use of patient narratives to support students’ understanding of communication challenges and patient perspectives in cross-cultural healthcare contexts. In parallel, I explore the integration of English for Nursing Purposes with nursing simulation education, including the development of simulation scenarios, task-based assessments, and the training and use of English-speaking simulated patients. Through these approaches, I aim to contribute to the development of practical and contextually relevant methods for preparing nursing students to communicate effectively in diverse clinical settings.
