Job title


As a research geologist working with local government, I am enthusiastic for the following themes.

1. Reconstruction of eruption column
Reconstruction of an eruption is an art to know parameters of an eruption such as total erupted volume, eruption column height, eruption duration and wind condition during an eruption from a geological record. Such eruption parameters are critically important to establish a disaster mitigation measures. My research interest is inversion to know the eruption parameter from its ash dispersal, which is known by geological investigation on the ground.

2. Underground structure of Hakone volcano
Hakone is one of the largest hot spring resort in Japan and our institution is in charge of research to keep the hot spring usage sustainable. The hot spring resource in Hakone is rather localized even in the edifice, and recent study revealed that the geological structure of the volcano affects the shape and location of hot spring aquifers significantly. I study underground geology and its relationship with hot springs, fumaroles and active faults of this area.

3. The 2015 Hakone Eruption
 Hakone volcano is an active volcano and intensive fumarolic and seismic activities have been observed; however, there had been no historical record of eruption. The 2015 eruption is the first eruption witnessed by the scientist and based on the geophysical and geological observations I proposed an eruption model of the event. The 2015 eruption have been studied from many aspects and the accomplishments are compiled in the special issue of "Earth, Planets and Space", a Springer-Nature journal.

After the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, I had been in charge of searching tsunami deposit in the prefectural territory. Although no tsunami deposit was obtained, intensive borehole sampling give us timing of previous megathrust earthquakes of the Sagami Bay, south of Tokyo. As summarized above, I have enjoyed collaborations with geologists and geophysicists having different background to explore new frontiers.
