Fretting wear performance of TiN coating was examined under lubricated condition. The TiN coating was plated onto the hard bearing steel(SUJ2) by are-ion plating process. Lubricating oil used was an engine oil, SAE10W-30. A crossed-cylinder configuration was employed to make the fretting wear of self-mated specimens with normal load ranged from 19.6N to 58.8N (maximum Herzian pressure 1.25GPa to 1.80GPa), stroke 3 mu m to 160 mu m, fretting cycles 2x10(5) and 10(6). The results showed that the TiN coating possessed very good fretting wear resisting performance and was hardly worn even after fretted 10(6) cycles with 58.8N. The results were examined and discussed based on the additional experiments in inert gas and in distilled water. The excellent fretting wear resisting performance was attributed to preventing oxidation wear and detachment due to decreasing the coefficient of friction by lubricating oil.
