The size of the characteristic transverse mode of a planar microcavity without transverse confinement has been measured by observing the near-field pattern of a planar Rhodamine6G microlaser. This is the first direct observation of the effective mode radius of a planar microcavity proposed by one of the authors [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 30 (1991) L901] or, equivalently, the transverse correlation length proposed by DeMaritni et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 65 (1990) 1853].
