海洋で繁栄している円石藻や珪藻などの植物プランクトンは、陸上植物や他の緑色植物や紅色植物に属する藻類群とは大きく異なり、ゲノム構造も異なる。したがって、陸上植物、緑藻類やシアノバクテリアで確立された代謝モデルはこれらの藻類には当てはまらない。本発表では、円石藻が持つ葉緑体内でのC4化合物の合成経路を中心に、海洋植物プランクトンに特徴的な炭素代謝経路について、他生物群とも比較しながら紹介する。
