近年,マイクロ固体レーザーの高輝度化は著しく,これまで固体レーザーのパルスギャップであったサブナノ秒でのジャイアントパルス発生が望めるようになった.そして,このジャイアントパルス光を用いて,強力かつ効率的なエンジン点火を狙った研究が進行中である.本章ではこれらレーザー点火の諸特性と,持続可能社会実現に要請の高い低燃費,低排出で高性能なエンジンについて,ジャイアントパルスマイクロレーザー,マイクロチップレーザーの可能性と併せ展望を解説したい.
