Profile

Microstructural analysis of ethylene ionomers and control of the structure and properties/The ionomers are defined as hydrophobic polymers (such as polyethylene, polystyrenes)containing a small amount of (in most cases less than 15 mole % of) ions attached as pendant or end groups. The latter ionic groups tend to form aggregates called ionic aggregates in the hydrophobic polymer matrix, and the presence of these aggregates produces many unique and useful properties of ionomers, superior to the host polymer (such as polyethylene). Although they are now used as many daily life goods such as food covering films, paper-containing sheets, golf ball covers etc, understanding of the microstructure is far from complete and our knowledge is still only qualitative. More quantitative information is necessary and our projects have been analyzing the microstructures of ionomers using many spectroscopic techniques (such as XRD, IR, UV, ESR, dielectric, etc). Our purposes is to understand in detail the structure-property relationships and thus to obtain factors controlling their performances and to develop new functions./Clarifying the microstructure of thermotropic cubic phases/Thermotropic cubic phase is as a mesophase formed between crystalline and isotropic liquid phases on varying temperature, and very mysterious in that both liquid-like molecular state and three-dimensional long-range periodicity with cubic symmetry are realized in it. This phaseis in most cases known to date constructed by rod-like molecules; hundreds or thousands of molecules are in one unit lattice. Our concern is why and how such shape-anisotropic molecules construct optically isotropic cubic structures in a certain temperature range. Our aim is to clarify these questions and establish the molecular design principles for forming cubic mesophases. These investigations would also open to routes to new functions based on cubic-phase-forming materials.
