生元素循環という観点から水域生態系の維持機構や変動要因に関する研究を行っている。具体的には、微生物群集と有機物の相互作用とそれが海洋における炭素・窒素循環に及ぼす影響に関する研究や、各種同位体を用いた生態系の新しい解析手法の開発に関する研究などが含まれる。
