For embankments which include a culvert, sufficient examination of the earthquake-resistant capacity in the culvert's longitudinal direction has not been conducted up to now. This is because the principal body of culverts did not suffer any major damage in past earthquakes. Thus, it had been thought that just restoring the collapsed bank would be enough. In this study, dynamic centrifuge model tests, intended for an arch culvert embankment with a perpendicular wall, are performed by focusing on the structural design of the culvert's joints. As a result, it becomes clear that there is a major difference in the tension force generated in the culvert depending on the connection style of the jointing. Moreover, for the configuration method of the mine's mouth, large sectional force may occur locally, due to the extrusion force and the tensile force of the wall, if the culvert is connected to a wall. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
