The mechanical modeling of a high-damping rubber damper and its optimal placement in a building are presented. The model consists of one linear spring, two linear dashpots, and one nonlinear spring in order to represent the amplitude- and frequency-dependent properties of the damper. The restoring force characteristic of the nonlinear spring is formulated by incorporating a versatile hysteresis model. The validity of the model is shown by comparing the test results with the analytical results via the model. Subsequently, a damper-placement design procedure is developed with the use of a simplified mechanical model of the high-damping rubber for finding the storywise distribution of dampers such that every peak interstory drift would coincide with the prescribed value. Seismic response analyses are carried out for a building with the optimally placed high-damping rubber dampers, and this demonstrates the effectiveness and the validity of the proposed damper placement.
