Effect of particle shape on terminal velocity

To examine effect of particle shape including dust-particles produced by the circular sawing of wood and wood based materials, terminal velocity of 100 mesh-size particles was measured in an experimental wind tunnel. A vertical tunnel set-up was made of a grass tube of 95 mm inner radius and 1510 mm height. Air flow generated by a multi-blade fan controlled by an inverter was straightened through some sheets of fine wire nets set on the air inlet part of the cylindrical glass tube. Experimental results of the terminal velocity on test particles were compared by calculating values on spherical particle. Results were as follows:
1) The test condition in an experimental wind tunnel was reliable for measurement of terminal velocity of the 100 mesh-size particle.
2) Calculated value on terminal velocity of porous particles has better agreement with the measurement value when bulk density instead of velocity in calculation was used.
3) Shape became a considerable factor to affect on terminal velocity of the particles.
4) Aspect ratio, i.e., ratio of major length and minor length of flat-shaped sawn particles seems to affect on their terminal velocity.
