A new dibenzofuran, named hypostrepsilalic acid, was isolated from a spore-derived mycobiont culture of the lichen, Stereocaulon japonicum, and structurally characterized. Hypostrepsilalic acid was not detected in the natural lichen sample, which produced both atranorin and stictic acid. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
