The gain characteristics of longitudinal discharge F, lasers were investigated. The discharge tube consisted of a ceramic pipe of an inner diameter of 5 mm and a length of 15 cm with two metallic electrodes at each end, and with a special preionization electrode. When the tube was used as an oscillator, a laser output energy of 100 muJ was obtained at 1 atm total pressure with an excitation density of 1.5 MW/cm(3). The time resolved gain measurement of the F, laser was made in the oscillator-amplifier configuration, and the peak value of the gain coefficient was estimated to be 11% cm(-1). The numerical analysis of the discharge circuit was made to estimate discharge resistances, inductances and currents in the excitation circuit. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
