Profile

Masataka Koyama has been professor of mathematics education at Hiroshima University in Japan since 2007, and Vice-dean of Graduate School and Faculty of Education since 2009. He obtained his B.Ed., M.Ed., and Ph.D. from Hiroshima University. He began his career as an assistant professor of mathematics education at Hyogo University of Teacher Education in 1986 and moved back to Hiroshima University as a lecturer of mathematics education in 1991. His research includes students’ mathematical understanding, international comparative study on students’ mathematical attainments, mathematics teachers’ professional development, and school mathematics curricula and textbooks for primary and secondary schools. He teaches prospective secondary school mathematics teachers in the undergraduate and Master programs and prospective university educators/researchers of mathematics education in the Ph.D. program at Hiroshima University. He is also actively involved in the international and national activities for society of mathematics education and the teachers’ professional development through lesson study of mathematics in primary and secondary schools.
