近年, 絶滅危惧種に指定されたメダカはわが国で最小の淡水魚であり, 遊泳能力が低いと考えられるため, メダカの保全を考慮した水路の計画・設計に際しては, 適正な流速についての十分な検討が必要である。本研究では, 模型水路を用い, 種々の流速における遊泳行動, および流速が増大する過程での水草背後への避難行動について分析した。メダカにとって移動などのための安全な流速は15-20cm/s以下, また, 流れによって自由な遊泳を制限されない流速は1-3cm/s以下であることなどが明らかになった。
