日本産水生昆虫，とくにトビケラの分類と生物地理を研究しています．2018年3月に「日本産水生昆虫 科・属・種への検索」を編者として改訂しました．13年ぶりです．応用生態工学会の幹事長，理事，会長などを歴任して，河川の保全と回復の基礎研究も実施しています．博物館では，自然史学の普及，学校との連携などを目指しています．Landscape and Ecological Engineering, 陸水生物学報の編集も担当しています．
