1. Digitized over 200 articles, essays, analyses, video clips, and uploaded them to and organized them on the Sophia University Media Center’s moodle website.

Purpose: My purpose in uploading the above files to the Sophia University Media Center’s moodle website is to try to accelerate and enhance the learning process for my students.

First, there is the convenience of moodle. The uploaded readings and video clips can be accessed by a student from a school or home computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It therefore allows the student to enhance his learning on any day or at any time that is convenient for him. He is not confined to study within certain prescribed hours, as he would be if he were studying at, for example, a library.

With the additional time that is invested into studying, the student can not only be more knowledgeable about the subject at hand, he can also be better prepared for any upcoming class exams, discussions, papers, etc. And when he is better prepared for the class, his academic performance is enhanced.

In the 2 years that I have been using moodle for my classes, I have seen a noticeable improvement in the papers, presentations, etc. by my students. For example, in my seminar on Contemporary American Literature, my students have been incorporating still shots from the video clips on the moodle website into their research papers, using the “Insert” function on the toolbar in MS Word. Being able to incorporate this kind of visual evidence into the papers helps enhance the persuasiveness of the argument and the overall quality of the papers.

2. Worked on Tokyo Shoseki’s New Horizon junior high school English textbooks, giving advice on the English as a native speaker of English and an educator in the field of English-language education. My responsibilities included attending numerous meetings to create new English material (conversations, stories, etc.) for use in these textbooks.

During the meetings, the work was generally collaborative. Working with about 10-15 educators in the field of English-language education, we would discuss what kind of content would be suitable for the textbooks, brainstorm possible ideas for the content and the form that it would take (i.e. story, conversation, etc.), and proceed to write the content, contributing everything from themes and scenarios to individual sentences, lines and words, all the while keeping to the language and vocabulary level for junior high school students as prescribed by the Ministry of Education.

3. Developed a method of discussion in an Introduction to American Culture class in an effort to stimulate the English-language students in the class to use as much English as possible in a discussion setting while striving to tackle intellectually-stimulating cultural and literary themes and be able to articulate them well in English.
