Koichi Ishiyama

Koichi Ishiyama is currently a professor of tranlsation, interpretation and journalism at Toin University of Yokohama's Law Department and has been a columnist since 2007 for Shogakukan Inc.'s Languageworld column titled "Koichi Ishiyama's Latest Neologism Watching"(http://l-world.shogakukan.co.jp/colum/watching.html). Shogakukan is Japan's biggest publisher.
Born in 1947 in Akita City, Ishiyama graduated from Akita Senior High School in 1965 and went to the U.S. after obtaining a scholarship from the Grew Foundation established by former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Joseph C. Grew. He received a B. A. degree after graduating with high honors from the Political Science Department of Middlebury College in 1969 and took a M.A. from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1970.
Then he returned to Japan and worked as simultaneious interpreter for Simul International Inc. in 1971 and studied as a research student at the University of Tokyo in 1972. Then he started a journalistic career, first as a reporter for the Associated Press (AP) in 1973, then for the Times of London, for the Straits Times and Business Times of Singapore in that order. Then he turned to the academic career, first as associate professor of English at Komazawa Women's Junior College's Department of English and English Literature, and then as associate professor of tranlsation, interpretation and journalism at Toin University of Yokohama's Law Department. He was promoted to full professorship in 2004 and retired in 2010. But he was rehired and has been working as visiting progessor at Toin since 2010 up to now. At present, he is also working as adjunct instructor at Otsuma University's Graduate School of Language and Culture Studies.
Moreover, he also worked as a contract reporter for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei)'s International Department, part-time instructor for Simul Academy, part-time simultaneous Japanese-to-English newscaster for Nippon TV and adviser for Nikkei News Bulletin Inc.(NNB), a now-defunct Nikkei subsidiary. He is a prolific writer and has authored a number of books including "How do you say "Aruki-Sumaho" in English?--The Japanese-English Dictionary of Latest Neologisms and Current Words"(published by Shogakukan Inc.),
best-selling "Pocket Progressive English-Japanese/Japanese-Engllish Dictionary" (Shogakukan), "Trend Japanese-English Dictionary of Current Terms"(Shogakukan), "Japanese-English Dictionary of Modern Usage" (the Japan Times) and "Common Mistakes in Japanese English" (Jiyu Kokumin Sha).
