A technique for two-dimensional position readout from radiation detectors, “Modified Backgammon Method with Weighted Coupling Capacitors”, has been developed and applied to multiwire proportional counters and charged-particle detectors based on microchannel plates. Its position resolution and image linearity have been proved to be similar to or better than preceding position-encoding techniques. Development of a two-dimensional photon counter based on the technique is proceeding.
