This paper represents an initial attempt to understand and document the role of "sashimono" (tenoned beams), important horizontalmembers in the frames of traditional Japanese timber buildings. Hitherto, they have been noted mainly as sashigamoi (deep-section lintels), capable of bearing load and permitting the omission of intermediate posts and the achievement of clear spans.Focusing on minka (vernacular houses), this research identifies 3 other categories of sashimono, namely aisle-incorporatingsashimono, bay-enclosing sashimono, and frame-stabilizing sashimono. Our results demonstrate that discussion of sashimono fromthe standpoints of direction of span, loading, and tenoning characteristics can further our understanding of minka structure.
