This paper reports an experiment of cutting using a cutting tool made of functionally graded material and assesses its cutting property. Functionally graded materials are composed of two different types of materials, which are integrated into one material by gradually changing their internal composition. We produced a functionally graded material consisting of two different materials; a ceramic material which has high thermal resistance on one side and a metallic material which has excellent fracture toughness on the other side. A high-speed cutting test was conducted to assess the adaptability of functionally graded material for cutting tools.
