Yutaka Kohgo is Professor Emeritus of Asahikawa Medical University and Professor and Director of Gastroenterology and Preventive Medicine of International University of Health and Welfare Hospital, Japan. He obtained MD and PhD from Sapporo Medical College, Japan and has trained postodoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. Jim Drysdale, Tufts University, Boston, His researches on iron have been focused on the development of biomarkers on iron betabolism and erythropoiesis and iron toxicity in chronic diseases. He established the concept that soluble transferrin receptor reflects the bone marrow erythropoiesis, which is currently one of the gold standards evaluating anemia and body iron storage. He served as a chairman of BioIron 2007 Kyoto meeting (second congress of International BioIron Society) and is currently the Director of Asia Pacific Iron Academy (APIA). He published more than 350 original articles.

Major contributions on iron metabolism are:
1. Development of serum ferritin measurement using radioimmunoassay
2. Elucidation of regulatory mechanism of liver isoferritin turnover in iron-loaded rat
3. Discovery of circulating transferrin receptor in human serum and Development of its assay system
4. Prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma by iron deprivation
5. Establishment of stable and sensitive assay system of non-transferrin bound iron
