The Nakamura village located at the north of the Oki-Dogo island in the Sea of Japan has huge pine tree woods along the beautiful sandy beach. The woods have not only a role as a windbreak protecting the village against winds but various roles. The questionnaires to the residents and users of the woods and the sandy beach, the measurements of outdoor thermal environments including in the woods, and the observational survey of utilize of the woods were conducted in the village. Following results were obtained. The windbreak of pine tree woods were grown by resident and the severe wind conditions are eased utilizing nature effectively. The windbreak offers relatively cool environments to the residents in daytime of summer, and it is utilized as a place of common communication and relaxation. The windbreak is pride for residents. Therefore, we concluded that the windbreak was a good example of symbiotic design for supporting a lifestyle which was adapted for the climate.
