The main purpose of this paper lies in introducing an attempt to foster communicative ability in the Classical Chineseclass for technical college students in the lower grades.Last year, I had an opportunity to give only a Classical Chinese class to the first-year students throughout theacademic year. In the class, not only a reading skill or grammatical knowledge for better understanding Chinese poetry,but also various self-activities in class for fostering their communicative ability were encouraged. Namely, such asillustrating each of Chinese poems, looking up names of Kanji in a dictionary and summarizing these outcomes wereimposed upon each of the students, and finally, they gave a presentation on the poem or a poem in Lunyu. In such astyle of class, which allowed me to make various attempts which were different from previous ones, the studentsparticipated voluntarily, and it was highly evaluated on class evaluation.
