The temperature dependence of light diffusion has been investigated for a macroporous monolith infiltrated with liquid crystal molecules. A macroporous aluminosilicate glass doped with Sm(2+) is prepared via a sol-gel route by inducing the phase separation parallel to the hydrolysis and condensation of metal alkoxides. The interconnected macropores of the sintered glass are infiltrated with liquid crystal 4-cyano-4'-n-pentyldiphenyl (5CB) which undergoes the phase transition between nematic and isotropic at 35 degrees C. Time resolved transmission experiments reveal that the diffusion constant for 5CB-filled glass exhibits a significant change at around the phase transition temperature of 5CB. The results indicate that the diffusion constant in the 5CB-filled monolith can be tuned externally via temperature.
