A study on particle segregation processes in debris flow

This paper presents and discusses about the debris particles routing and deposition pattern characteristics at 20 slope angle. This research demonstrates the debris flow particle mechanism between two different particle sizes which were 10mm and 2.5mm. In order to accommodate the main concern and challenges of debris flow particle routing mechanism study, the following objectives are set up. The objectives are to obtain experimental proof of the debris routing particle segregation of two distinct particle diameters and to understand the detail mechanisms of deposition pattern. The particle movement was visually analyzed by using high speed video camera (HSVC) to capture the movement characteristics of the individual particle grain. The bigger particle movements (high average velocity) were concentrated at the upper part of the fluid, while small particles (low average velocity) were concentrated near the bottom. Moreover, the biggest stones accumulated at the front part, and the forefront contained little water. Henceforth, the prediction of larger particle movement is important to comprehend the debris-flow fan formation. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V ...
