The TPI test was administered to members of the Juntendo University Women's and men's basketball teams in order to assess improvement in team strength. An objective was to verify the validity of the TPI test by comparing the women's and men's teams. The subjects were 37 members of the Juntendo University Women's Basketball Team and 23 members of the men's team. These two teams took part in a team building program one month before the start of the season's league competition. During this program TPI testing was carried out. Then the test was given once again just before the beginning of the league competition and comparative evaluation was made. A summary of the results is given below. The TPI test was able to show the influence of individual differences within the teams. It was also able to point out the influence of individual's mental condition upon others. This showed the team's influence and capacities, or in other words, its strength. Furthermore, the results of TPI agreed greatly with the actual game performances of players about whom there were worries, suggesting at least one of the factors involved in the team's record of wins and losses. Of course, team strength as well as the influence of individuals and mental attitude, are things which vary form time to time. On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that in order to make effective use of TPI, feed back from the test results regarding current problems should be given to the team, and urgent problems should be dealt with. TPI is able to show the ''true'' condition of a team, which is often hidden behind its surface appearances. This study confirms that TPI is a test which can broadly assess a team's strengths on the basis of an objective understanding of individuals mental condition. Although the present study compared only the differences between women and men basketball players, it is suggested that it is possible to use TPI to assess events and techniques in various other teams. This will be the subject of further research in the future.
