水溶性のアシルホスフォネートを開始剤として用いると(メタ)アクリル酸ナトリウムのような水溶性のモノマーのラジカル重合挙動を調べることができる。従来観測困難であった水溶液中でのラジカル重合開始反応についてTR ESR法を用いて調べた。水溶性の開始剤のみの溶液にレーザーを照射してTR ESRを測定するとリン中心ラジカルに基づく二重線と炭素中心ラジカルに基づく一重線が観測された。ここに(メタ)アクリル酸ナトリウムを加えて測定すると連鎖開始ラジカルに基づくスペクトル線が観測された。
