Luminescent effects due to infrared stimulation have been investigated in an undoped ZnS crystal and various ZnS phosphor powders. Many varieties of infrared stimulation spectra are observed in the 1.3 to 10 μm spectral range including narrow lines and broad band responses. Narrow line positions are found to depend on phosphor composition. The spacing between these lines is much closer than the LO and TO phonon energies of ZnS. A smooth shift of the narrow line positions toward lower energies and continuous increase of line widths are measured with increasing temperature. The narrow line spectra have several features that suggest a transition from the ground state to an excited state of an impurity or defect rather than direct excitation of a bound electron (hole) to conduction (valence) band. The response of ZnS phosphors is also examined for 300 K thermal sources and it appears that ZnS can be used for passive IR imaging.
