Our group has elaborated novel transparent polymer hybrids by using various physical interactions between organic polymer and silica gel. In this research, transparent polymer hybrids with the designed alkoxysilane [IL(Cl -)-TMOS] were prepared by using ionic interactions between carboxylic acid of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and cationic imidazolinium moieties. By solvent extraction of the obtained polymer hybrids, nanoporous materials in which the size would be derived from PAA domain were achieved, and at the same time, imidazolinium chloride moieties were successfully induced at the surface of nanopores. The hydrophilicity of the obtained nanoporous materials showed dramatic changes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic by anion exchange. Furthermore, by selecting the interaction between polymer chain and silica gel, we could control the amount and the kind of functional groups induced at the surface of nanopores.
