Rat, the protagonist's dead friend, appears as the Sheep-Man and a ghost, and then disappears again. The protagonist's dead girlfriend appears as "the girl who'd sleep with anyone" and "the girl with magical ears" ; the former is killed in a traffic accident, and the latter leaves him suddenly. Furthermore, the poetics of "re-loss" is applied not only to characters but also to an object and a place ; the stop of a clock symbolizes Rat's "re-loss, " and the protagonist's leaving his hometown beach suggests the "re-loss" of his adolescence.
